Audi TT HomeLatest VW Audi NewsAudi R9 SupercarA new Audi Supercar is expected to be released in 2006. The new Audi R9 will be faster than the new Porsche 997 C4 and is expected to cost slightly less. The on the road price could well be less than £60,000 and for that you get a 4.2 litre V8 which will produce over 400bhp and over 300 lb/ft of torque. In the lightweight R9 that should be good for a power to weight ratio of almost 300bhp per tonne so a 0-60 time of well under 5 seconds can be expected. The new C4 which retails at just over £60,000 has a similar weight, but its flat six engine produces about 20% less power than the V8 Audi and has a 0-60 time of of around 5 seconds. Audi will probably gear the new supercar to be good for a slightly higher top speed than the C4's 175mph. While the new Audi will be nowhere near as fast as Porsche's awesome Carrera GT, if it does come in at the expected price it will be great value for money. The new Audi uses core components from VW group's highly acclaimed new Lamborghini Gallardo combined with the V8 engine from the new Audi RS4 which is release this October. Audi RS4 SaloonThe new Audi RS4 looks great value for its list price of just under £50,000. For that you get four wheel drive and all the electronic aids you could want to ensure that the 414bhp is laid down as effectively as possible. Although power output is 'only' slightly over 250bhp per tonne the RS4 is expected to reach 60 in under 5 seconds, and its top speed will be limited to 155mph. The RS4 weighs in at 1650kg and looks good value compared to BMW's M3. BMW enthusiasts will no doubt continue to prefer the M3 to the RS4, but we think the RS4 is now the better of the two cars, and the Beamer costs almost 20% more than the new Audi. While the Nissan 350Z is stealing the headlines, Audi have stripped out the rear seats of the TT, further tightened up the suspension, and given it a small power boost compared to the standard 225 model. The result is a car which is still down on power compared to the Nissan's 3.5 litre V6, but which is over 10% lighter than the rear wheel drive only car. 0-60 times for the sport are just over 6 seconds, compared to the Nissan's time of 5.8 seconds in the dry. On a dry track, the Nissan probably just has the edge over the TT, though in everyday conditions the TT Sport may well be the better performer of the two thanks to the stability that the Audi's 4 wheel drive system provides. We're huge fans of the TT's styling and ergonomics - it's a package that works superbly well to this day, despite the fact that it's now been around for a very long time. However, we're prepared to admit that the TT faces much stiffer competition than it did when it was launched. Both the TT Sport and the Nissan 350Z are priced at a shade under £30,000; so pay your money and take your choice.
