USA 2000 Celica GTS (Celica 190 to UK fans) |
Not forgetting Celica Fans.
Toyota are almost unique amongst volume manufacturers in offering more
than one performance sports car. The latest Celica is no couch
potato. It might not share the MR2s mid engine layout, but it still
handles very well, and the GTS or 190 versions benefit from VVTL-i which
gives them a 50bhp boost over the power of the GT or Standard UK
versions. This gives a similar power to weight ratio as the MR2, and
a superb rigid bodyshell provides handling to match. |

Many drivers
will actually prefer the beautiful manners of the Celica, and those who
need a little space will find the Celica a much more practical
choice. Even with the 140 standard engine this is a great car.
Practical enough for everyday use, but with handling that will bring a
smile to your face every time you find a stretch of open twisty
road. The standard equipment is a treat with air conditioning,
sports seats and a CD/Radio/Cassette player fitted to every model.
So if you want a great sports car that has storage space for more than a
packet of cigarettes the Celica is the car for you. |

| Others Of course the genuine Toyota Supercar isn't available in the UK any longer. In 1998 new emission and noise regulations meant that we had to say goodbye to the brilliant Supra. This baby was fitted with the 326bhp, 3 litre, twin turbocharger engine from the Lexus GS300 but weighed in at only 1620kgs. OK it's a bit heavier than an MR2, or even the new Celica but 326bhp made it very very fast. Toyota admit that they could have got the car within the new regulations (noise down from 77db to 74 and emissions from 2.72g/km to 2.2g/km) but the very small production volumes of the Supra just couldn't justify the necessary work. |

Some would argue that with such fun to be had from the MR2 and Celica they can live without the Supra - but Supra fans were sorry to see the back of this Supercar and look forward to its return one day. Meanwhile second hand Supras are very sought after.
